This is Sad. Hounded by "overzealous" cops and photojournalists, a college girl committed suicide in Jalandhar after being spotted with a boy in a car. Shivali (20), a student of SD College, ended her life by jumping in front of a train near the Domoria flyover. Earlier, a crowd gathered in the old Jawahar Nagar bazaar near the women's college following a collision between two cars. A police team led by inspector Balwinder Kaur reached the spot and tried to resolve the matter. The police told Shivali, who was in one of the cars, to come out. No sooner did she leave the car that the photojournalists, who were accompanying the police, started clicking her pictures. Shivali, a local resident, threatened to end her life if the lensmen didn't stop, but her pleadings fell on deaf ears. While Gaurav, friend of Shivali, was paying for the damage to the other driver, Shivali tried to escape the scene but was called again by the same inspector. The police not only grilled her but also made her sign a letter of apology before letting her go with a warning. Unable to bear this public humiliation, Shivali took the extreme step. An eyewitness said he subsequently took the girl to his shop and offered her water. "Before she left, I advised her not to get panicky. About 30 minutes later, we got the news of her suicide," he added. However, Police claim that she slipped while she was crossing the railway line and they even have an eyewitness as a proof.

Death for Ajmal Kasab

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentence of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack convict Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, saying that waging war against the country was the primary and foremost offence committed by the Pakistani terrorist. A bench of justice Aftab Alam and justice CK Confession nailed Kasab Prasad dismissed the plea of 25-year-old Kasab challenging his conviction and death sentence confirmed by the Bombay high court. The bench rejected his contention that he was not given a free and fair trial in the case. The bench also observed that the failure of government to provide him an advocate at the pre-trial stage did not vitiate trial court proceedings against him. Sikh rights body strongly condemn flag burners

New York (August 8, 2012): Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), a human rights advocacy group which is spearheading a US wide campaign against religious intolerance that resulted in the killing of six Sikhs during a shootout at Wisconsin Sikh temple took a strong exception to the burning of American flag by members of National Akali Dal in New Delhi.

SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun stated that it is unfortunate that members of National Akali Dal have burnt the American flag in Delhi as this sends a wrong signal to the US government which is taking every measure to safeguard the interests of the Sikh community after the Sikh massacre. As the attack on Wisconsin Sikh temple suggests, “there are already Anti-Sikh sentiments budding in some quarters of American Society and the action of burning American flag by National Akali Dal will only fuel such more sentiments against the Sikhs, a religious minority” added attorney Pannun.

In an organized move to raise religious awareness amongst the American community, Sikh Rights Group, SFJ has been joined by American Gurudwara Prabhandhik Committee (AGPC), Sikh Youth of America (SYA) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) along with management committees of various Sikh temples across North America.

The birth of Krishna is in itself a transcendental phenomenon that generates awe among the Hindus and overwhelms one and all with its supra mundane happenings. Mother Earth, unable to bear the burden of sins committed by evil kings and rulers, appealed to Brahma, the Creator for help. Brahma prayed to the Supreme Lord Vishnu, who assured him that he would soon be born on earth to annihilate tyrannical forces. One such evil force was Kamsa, the ruler of Mathura (in northern India) and his people were utterly terrified of him. On the day Kamsa's sister Devaki was married off to Vasudeva,an akashvani or voice from the sky was heard prophesying that Devaki's 8th son would be the destroyer of Kamsa. The frightened Kamsa immediately unsheathed his sword to kill his sister but Vasudeva intervened and implored Kamsa to spare his bride, and promised to hand over every new born child to him. Kamsa relented but imprisoned both Devaki and her husband Vasudeva.

When Devaki gave birth to her first child, Kamsa came to the prison cell and slaughtered the newborn. In this way, he killed the first six sons of Devaki. Even before her 8th child was born, Devaki and Vasudeva started lamenting its fate and theirs. Then suddenly Lord Vishnu appeared before them and said he himself was coming to rescue them and the people of Mathura. He asked Vasudeva to carry him to the house of his friend, the cowherd chief Nanda in Gokula right after his birth, where Nanda's wife Yashoda had given birth to a daughter.

He was to exchange his boy and bring Yashoda's baby daughter back to the prison. Vishnu assured them that "nothing shall bar your path". At midnight on ashtami, the divine baby was born in Kamsa's prison. Remembering the divine instructions, Vasudeva clasped the child to his bosom and started for Gokula, but found that his legs were in chains. He jerked his legs and was unfettered! The massive iron-barred doors unlocked and opened up. While crossing river Yamuna, Vasudeva held his baby high over his head. The rain fell in torrents and the river was in spate. But the water made way for Vasudeva and miraculously a five-mouthed snake followed him from behind and provided shelter over the baby. When Vasudeva reached Gokula, he found the door of Nanda's house open. He exchanged the babies and hurried back to the prison of Kamsa with the baby girl. Early in the morning, all the people at Gokula rejoiced the birth of Nanda's beautiful male child. Vasudeva came back to Mathura and as he entered, the doors of the prison closed themselves. When Kamsa came to know about the birth, he rushed inside the prison and tried to kill the baby. But this time it skipped from his hand and reaching the sky. She was transformed into the goddess Yogamaya, who told Kamsa: "O foolish! What will you get by killing me? Your nemesis is already born somewhere else." In his youth Krishna killed Kamsa along with all his cruel associates, liberated his parents from prison, and reinstated Ugrasen as the King of Mathura.

Recalling the auditions, and sharing his initial reserve in casting her, Karan says, “You should have seen this tubby girl singing to Sonam Kapoor’s song ‘Bahara’ from ‘I Hate Luv Storys’, with all her jhatkas and matkas. It was hysterical! She was too good, putting her hair up and aping the typical Bollywood heroine to the hilt. I couldn’t help thinking, ‘Here is a modern, affluent girl who has the perfect mannerisms of a Hindi film heroine!’ The moment I saw her name on the shortlist, I told my assistant directors to call her in.”

Daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan – Alia Bhatt was more than prepared to put in hard-work towards becoming an actress.
